MACED works so that Appalachian communities are better places to live.
We partner with local people to build upon the strengths of the
region and assist businesses that grow local economies and create
opportunities for low-income people.
Kentuckians
For The Commonwealth is a community of people taking action
for justice. We work with people to organize in their home communities
and across the state. We help everyday community members become
extraordinary community leaders. We support community leaders
as they build effective organizations. Together, we win important
issue campaigns.
KEF was founded as a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization to serve
the Central Kentucky community by working to oppose the Army's
plans to incinerate chemical weapons. 70% of KEF's Board are
elected by Common Ground members. The other 30% of KEF's board
are "at large" positions. At the time KEF was founded
there was no national movement for safe disposal, and KEF founders
were focused on the issue of how to prevent the Army from building
incinerators in Kentucky.
MERJ
Market at Pilot Knob is a sustainable community center for activities,
networking, and exchange of goods and skills. MERJ is open from
1-5pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The MERJ Clean & Green FarMarket
offers fresh local produce, eggs, and home-made bread. Typical
produce includes salad greens, onions, garlic, mushrooms, and
more! MERJ also serves as an alternative pick-up site for the
Foothills Bulk Food Buying Co-op, coordinates orders of Kenny's
Farmhouse Cheese (Kentucky Proud product), and offers access
to other local agricultural products through steer-shares, dairy-shares,
etc. MERJ members can also rent community garden beds and use
MERJ greenhouse space for their own agricultural projects.
Established
in 1999, the Sustainability
and Environmental Studies (SENS) Program is an important part of Berea College’s efforts
to develop a sustainable campus. SENS links the formal curriculum
of the classroom to the many opportunities for experiential learning-
learning by doing- that come from student, staff, and faculty
participation in the creation and operation of a College that “walks
the walk” regarding sustainability. SENS is a multidisciplinary
program whose goal is to infuse the teaching of sustainability
concepts throughout the College curriculum while guiding and
supporting the efforts of the College to practice sustainability.
Egret’s
Cove Intentional Community is a group of nine people including
two children that live on 15 acres of land about 7 miles southeast
of Berea. The land is mainly hilly oak forest with about one acre
of open land with gardens. Our primary focus is developing a more
ecologically sustainable way of living in this area.
