Edible Yard Contest

Food grown in your yard is as “local” as it can get. Throughout Berea, yards are producing vegetables, herbs, fruits, nuts, and even the occasional chicken. These yards are testing grounds for determining what grows well in Berea’s soils and climate, and developing innovative methods of food production.

Sustainable Berea would like to recognize and reward the best of these local food producers. If you have an edible yard located within the Berea city limits, and would like to share some of the knowledge behind your success, enter your yard in the Edible Yard Contest. Winners will each receive a $50 gift certificate from a local gardening-related business.

To enter, send a letter or email to Sustainable Berea with your name, address, and a description of your edible yard. What makes your yard a good example of an edible yard? Some of the things our judges will consider are:

  • proportion of the yard in edibles
  • variety of food plants grown
  • amount of food produced
  • quality of the produce
  • soil quality
  • growing of native or heirloom varieties
  • innovative practices for water conservation or pest control
  • creative use of small spaces

You are welcome to include pictures of your yard with your application.

Entries due by July 18. Judging of yard occurs July 19-25. Winners announced at the 100-mile Potluck on July 27.

Last year's Edible Yard Contest winners were:

  • Ed Hozdick, large garden category
  • Holly Troyer, medium garden
  • Pat Brunner, small garden
  • Sean and Hays Clark, educational garden
  • Sune Frederickson, special award for using produce from his garden at his Main Street Café
