Lecture: “Perennial Agriculture for a more Just and Sustainable Food System”

Given by Blake Cothron, Owner and Grower at Peaceful Heritage Plant Nursery

Wednesday, March 27th 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM @ the Berea Public Library Theater Room

What is perennial agriculture? How does it differ from your annual veggie garden? How can it contribute to resiliency and equity in our community? Can perennial agriculture help to mitigate climate change? These questions and more will be answered at our introductory lecture and first educational event with the Neighborhood Perennials Project (NPP). This is also a great opportunity to meet Blake, who is growing some of the fruit and nut trees provided by the NPP.

 

Info Session and Farm Tour: A discussion of types of perennial foods/flowers suited for growth in Berea and how to select a good planting site

Saturday, April 20th 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM @ the Berea Urban Farm

Description: This event is aimed at NPP participants who would like help in selecting plants and planting sites for their property. Sarah will provide a tour of the perennial agriculture we have at the Berea Urban Farm and discuss important considerations in selecting plant varieties and sites. We hope to answer questions including which rootstock is best for you. (i.e. dwarf or semi-dwarf trees); what plants would thrive best in your soil conditions?; how many plants can you accommodate on your property?; and more!

 

Workshop and Farm Tour: Supporting Pollinators on your Land

Given by Sarah Barney, Neighborhood Perennials Project Coordinator

Saturday, May 18th 10:00 – 12:00 AM @ Berea Urban Farm

Description: This event is aimed for NPP participants who would like help in selecting perennial flowers and planting sites for their property, as well as anyone who would like the learn how to evaluate the effectiveness of their pollinator gardens. Sarah will provide a tour of the pollinator-friendly flowers we have at the BUF and discuss important considerations in selecting plant varieties and sites, as well as tips for attracting hummingbirds to your yard. In addition, we will observe and catch pollinators and give you some tips on identifying native bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

 

Plant Pickup: Perennial Flower Distribution

Saturday, June 1st 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM @ Berea Urban Farm

Description: Registered NPP participants can come to the BUF and pick up their pollinator-friendly perennial flowers. This event coincides with GrowAppalachia’s field day at the BUF. This will be a great opportunity to interact with the vibrant plant-enthusiastic community in Berea!

 

Workshop: Summer Management of Fruit and Nut Trees

Given by Micah Wiles, Farmer at Cedar Creek Farm

Saturday, June 15th 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM @ Berea Urban Farm

Description: This event is aimed at NPP participants and other community members with fruit and nut trees to learn hands-on, technical information about orchard summer management. Topics include summer pruning, tree training and pest, and disease management. This is a great opportunity to meet Micah, who is growing some of the fruit and nut trees provided by the NPP.

 

Community Event: Neighborhood Perennials Project Dinner at the Berea Urban Farm

Saturday, August 24th 6 PM – 8 PM @ the Berea Urban Farm

Description: Come enjoy a lovely summer evening on the farm with other NPP participants! We will provide a meal with farm-fresh ingredients and a special focus on recipes utilizing perennial foods. Please bring your own recipes using perennial foods to share with the community.

 

Workshop: Site Preparation and Planting Fruit and Nut Trees

Given by Sarah Barney, Neighborhood Perennials Project Coordination

Saturday, November 2nd 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM @ the Berea Urban Farm

Description: This event is aimed at NPP participants who will be picking up their plants on November 16th. We will show you how to prepare your planting site, plant your trees and shrubs, mulch them and get them ready for winter. We highly encourage NPP participants to attend this workshop! The initial care you put into planting your trees is critical to their long-term health and success.

 

Plant Pickup and Planting Blitz: Fruit and Nut Tree and Berry Bush Distribution

Saturday, November 16th 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM @ Berea Urban Farm

Description: Registered NPP participants can come to the BUF and pick up their fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, and planting materials. We will also have a team of folks ready to help dig holes and plant trees for those that have requested assistance. Plants should go in the ground immediately – so folks will be simultaneously planting trees all over the city!
